Not much to report from the past few weeks. I’m still working on the book and it’s getting done little by little. The forecast keeps predicting snow, but we haven’t gotten any significant snowfall since the storm that brought the tree down in our driveway. We’re both relieved at not having to shovel like last year.

So, in lieu of any real news, I’m sharing a picture of my most recent pie. It came out beautifully. Everything worked: the crust, the the filling the topping. This is definitely the best key lime meringue pie I have ever made and possibly my best pie ever.

Tree in our driveway

February 6, 2016

We had just finished shoveling out the driveway last night when we heard a great crack from across the road and looked over just in time to see half an oak tree split away and come crashing across the road right into our driveway. If it had fallen five minutes earlier, it would have landed right on top of me. It tore down power and phone lines as it fell, although, luckily for us, it fell past our connection and we didn’t lose anything.

I called it in and the town workers were out very quickly to clear the road and take care of the electric line, but they left us with a tree and a tangle of phone lines in our driveway, so this morning E and I went out with our saw and loppers and hacked up the tree.

We salvaged what we could for firewood, broke the rest into manageable pieces and hauled it to a brush pile in the woods. It was a dirty, sweaty, four-hour job, but we got it done. Team J (Massachusetts division) does it again!

The return of the winter of our discontent

February 5, 2016

January was very mild. The big storm that hit the mid-Atlantic missed us, much to our relief. The light snow we had gotten after Christmas entirely melted away leaving the ground bare and squishy. It was kind of like having the first week of March for a month. Now the winter is back. We’ve been getting wet, heavy snow since last night. There’s about six inches on the ground now. We’ve been out to shovel a couple of times already; we’ll probably have to go out another time or two before it’s all over.

It was getting a little depressing to have winter without any snow on the ground, but after last year it has been a relief not to be shoveling every day. It now looks like there are a couple more storms that may hit us in the next week. We’ll see how things go from here.
