February/March special dinners: Farewell to Hobbiton and Supper at the Prancing Pony

Farewell to Hobbiton

“In the evening Frodo gave his farewell feast: it was quite small, just a dinner for himself and his four helpers… The dining-room was bare except for a table and chairs, but the food was good, there was good wine…”

February’s LotR dinner was based on Frodo’s last dinner before leaving Hobbiton. The novel tells us nothing about what was on the menu, so I tried to guess at what a cozy dinner for friends at Bag End might have looked like.

For appetizers we had boiled cabbage wedges with rosemary mint sauce. The main course was Samwise Gamgee’s most famousest fish and chips. Dessert was cake topped with jam and whipped cream.

Supper at the Prancing Pony

“In a twinkling the table was laid. There was hot soup, cold meats, a blackberry tart, new loaves, slabs of butter, and half a ripe cheese: good plain food, as good as the Shire could show, an homelike enough to dispel the last of Sam’s misgivings (already much relieved by the excellence of the beer).”

Supper at the Prancing Pony in Bree is one of the best-described meals in the novel. We have a very clear idea of what was eaten, but there is still some room for imagination. I made a soup of root vegetables in chicken stock (suitably hobbitish, I thought) and served some cold ham and chicken with warm onion gravy. For dessert I made a simple blackberry tart with just a sprinkling of sugar.
